HART pressure transmitters can be configured using a DCS or HART communicator. Pressure transmitters that use the Highway Addressable Remote Transducer (HART) communication protocol, one of the most widely used protocols for smart field devices, are compatible. Pressure transmitter data is conveyed using an AC digital signal that uses the 4-20mA analogue output signal as a carrier signal in HART applications, obviating the requirement for additional cables and connectors.
Calibration, modification, and adjustment are the three basic steps in the maintenance of a HART transmitter. Many configuration operations may be completed solely with a communicator, but calibration and correction necessitate the use of hardware that can reliably source pressure and monitor current. The majority of communicators lack the ability to measure or source analogue quantities.
Maintaining HART Transmitter
Communicating with the transmitter and checking its configuration data constitutes the process of configuring a HART transmitter. The various types of pressure transmitters and setups are outside the purview of this technical note, but standard configuration settings are provided here.
Calibrating a HART transmitter entails testing and fine-tuning its response such that the output accurately matches the input throughout a given range. This necessitates the use of a precise source of pressure to apply a precisely known value to the transmitter. The transmitter’s output is then evaluated by comparing it to the established applied frequency, and a correction is made if necessary. It is impossible to calibrate a transmitter without correlating its reaction to known physical stress.
Steps involved in maintenance
The process of adjusting the transmitter’s performance so that the output closely fits the predefined transfer function is known as adjustment. Following are the main various options for adjusting a conventional HART pressure transmitter:
Reranging analogous to altering the zero and stretch on an analogue transmitter, reranging establishes the bottom and higher range endpoints at needed pressures.
Trims the analogue output of the transmitter to conform to industry best practices. This effectively modifies the digital-to-analogue inverters on the transmitter.
Zero Trim compensates for pressure discrepancies caused by installation and alignment by adjusting the input gauge.
Sensor Trim is a feature that allows you to fine-tune the stock gauge. This compensates for sensors mistakes by altering the analogue-to-digital conversion.
The modifications that must be made to a HART transmitter are determined by how well the transmitter’s signals are utilised. Reranging, Zero & Analog Output Trim are reasonable changes, especially if the 4-20 mA output control stream is used. Sensor Trim is required if the transmitter’s electronic signals are only used.
